A few days ago during the event shoot, a friend asked me why we still needed to place flashlights on both sides of the stage under this kind of lighting environment.

There are many ways to capture a photo, and each person has their own style and approach. The reason I did it this way during this event is because I wanted to achieve the desired brightness for both the subject I wanted to capture and the background, without a significant difference in brightness between them. Another reason is that I wanted to correct the green color emitted by the indoor LED lights.

In general, when comparing photographers using flash, we often rely on the brightness seen with our own eyes as a reference, which can lead to significant errors and misunderstandings.

The human eye’s ability to see light and contrast is much more powerful compared to the cameras available to the general public today. Cameras still have a long way to go and many technical challenges to overcome.

Ordinary people who don’t often use cameras naturally can’t understand the extent of what a camera can achieve. This is where photographers feel quite troubled when hearing such opinions. The trouble lies in how to describe in order to make the person in front of them understand the difference between the eyes and a camera.

You say: Just show him the footage captured by the camera. However, during the shooting, I have already adjusted the visuals to be similar to what I see with my eyes.

What I mean is that simply looking at the camera’s screen isn’t very accurate. Some cameras have built-in filters. The best approach is to transfer the captured raw files to a computer for viewing. In a situation where no parameters have been adjusted, it is easier to perceive the differences.

So, typically when I hear such comments, I can only add that I want to correct the color of indoor lighting.

Color is a significant factor that I believe has a big influence, as it is also related to my personal shooting style and approach. I would prefer the overall colors to be as close as possible to what the eyes see, or even the normal impression of colors.

The most obvious aspect is the person’s skin color. After all, the skin occupies the largest portion of the frame, so if the skin color in the image doesn’t meet my own expectations, I feel uncomfortable.

The lights used for this event indoors were LED light tubes. Since they had been replaced before the event, I personally felt that there was a better transition in terms of color and brightness compared to before. However, the color still tended to be green.

Sometimes, if the flash doesn’t capture the moment, I can still use photo editing software to adjust the colors and ensure they don’t look too exaggerated. However, my idea is that if I can avoid the problem before pressing the shutter, it would be even more convenient and faster for me to process the photos later.

And ideas will generate actions. My approach is to cover the entire venue or key areas with my flashlight, without disturbing activities or the movement of people.

Above is my belief in the reasons for using a flash.

Sidebar: During a conversation with a friend, another friend chimed in and said, Photographers always have their own beliefs.

This is a compliment that I think is great. It not only speaks for the photographer but also warms their heart. When there is a third person helping to agree, it simultaneously adds credibility to the photographer’s words.

This is applicable in any human interaction.
