During a conversation with a newcomer, upon learning their interest in buying a camera, I briefly mentioned a few things to pay attention to and took the opportunity to share it with everyone for reference.

The most important consideration should be the budget. It refers to how much cost you can allocate for purchasing a camera, and it is not just about the camera but also the need to allocate budget for lenses, equipment storage, and possibly artificial lighting.

Of course, the cost of purchasing the camera body itself is currently the highest proportion. Next is the selection of lenses (assuming we are purchasing a camera system with interchangeable lenses). As for artificial lighting, it depends on personal needs and can be postponed until an actual need arises.

For the storage of machines, I recommend choosing a moisture-proof box. There are only a few market brands (can be counted on one hand). You can choose based on personal preference or blindly pick one with closed eyes or flipping a coin, just make sure to check if the capacity is sufficient.

Additionally, dehumidifier brands are available in various distribution channels, with different product names and representing different capacities. It is also possible to determine the required size of purchase based on budget.

I have bought four of them gradually, each of which is around 20-30 liters. They are not only used for storing cameras, but also for medications, cookies, photos, and more. I put any items that I am afraid of getting damp into the moisture-proof box. (I have also considered buying a cabinet-style moisture-proof box for shoes).

If you don’t have to consider budget constraints, congratulations, you can stop reading my ramblings and click elsewhere to read my articles.

If you have carefully considered budget issues, let’s continue reading.

Currently, there are three dominant players in the market, namely Canon, Nikon, and Sony, each with its own set of loyal supporters. Each brand also has its own desired image to convey through advertisements. If you don’t have a specific brand preference, you can explore the advertising content of each company and choose the one that truly resonates within you.

I currently don’t think there is a need to choose a specific brand to take photos. Oh, I forgot about Fuji. Well, you can’t blame me, Fuji still has a little bit of distance to meet the job requirements.

Of course, there are professional wedding photographers who use Fuji for shooting weddings and bridal portraits. Among the foreign photographers I follow, some also use the Fuji system. However, compared to the other three brands, I think Fuji has relatively fewer options, both in terms of camera bodies and lenses. This can make it more difficult to control costs.

The reason for listing these three manufacturers is mainly because they have been in the camera industry for many years and represent corresponding camera bodies and lenses at every consumer level. This will make it easier for you to find the combination that suits your own needs after setting a budget.

If all three of them still offer you a multitude of choices, then considering all three together is also possible. In the process of searching, you will definitely be able to find the camera combination that meets your ideal.

One of the most important factors is your own needs, such as the occasion, subject, and objective, which will influence your choice of camera features and lens focal length.

If it is for capturing people or landscapes, which are more popular demands, the camera and lens capabilities don’t need to be excessively powerful.

Fast and accurate autofocus, the camera can shoot over a dozen or twenty frames per second (the highest-end Sony and Nikon mirrorless cameras can currently shoot up to 120 frames per second). The lenses have ultrasonic autofocus motors, etc. You don’t have to constantly strive for the best, basic capabilities are enough to take great and impressive photos.

If there are special requirements such as macro photography, birds in flight, extreme temperatures, or restricted shooting conditions such as weddings, it will demand a certain level of camera functionality, lens focal length, and design, naturally leading to a higher budget compared to the previous category of shooting.

Only after identifying the situations and scenarios you most frequently encounter, can you determine which direction to go in search of a camera that suits you best.

At the beginning, I assumed that we were discussing interchangeable lens camera systems, so now we need to consider what kind of lenses you need.

The lens can be categorized into zoom lens and prime lens, while the camera body can be divided into DSLR camera and mirrorless camera. (This is a general classification based on popular choices in the market, not a strict one.)

I will explain in order of what I consider to be more important.

Most prime lenses are lighter than zoom lenses.

Don’t underestimate a difference of a few hundred grams, as you won’t just be carrying one camera and lens when you go out. You will also have other items to carry on you. Just imagine holding a camera in your hand all day, you would definitely want it to be as lightweight as possible.

Besides the lens, the weight of the camera body is also important, as you can’t take photos using just the lens without using the camera body.

The weight of mirrorless cameras without a reflex system is currently relatively lightweight. Although their battery life is shorter compared to DSLR cameras, considering the total weight you have to continuously carry in your hand, it is a problem that can be easily managed with a few batteries.

Buying a camera is meant for usage; it is a consumable item, not an offering to be placed on an altar or stored in a moisture-proof box. Since it is meant to be frequently used, it is important to consider all the factors that can impact your user experience, and weight is one such factor that greatly affects the user experience.

Prime lenses and mirrorless cameras are smaller in size compared to zoom lenses and DSLR cameras. Smaller size means more convenience for carrying, which doesn’t need much emphasis. This is similar to comparing carrying a camera and a mobile phone, where the convenience of carrying a mobile phone also surpasses that of a camera.

This part is about comparing lenses, and generally prime lenses have better image quality than zoom lenses. To explain in more detail, this means that at the same aperture, prime lenses have better image quality, although this difference will be smaller when the aperture is smaller.

This part is also only comparing lenses, and of course zoom lenses are more convenient than prime lenses, because they can be used within a range of focal lengths, whereas prime lenses rely on you changing the distance between you and the subject to achieve a change in focal length.

And how do you know if you need a zoom lens or a prime lens?

Examine your own photography habits. Identify the focal length you commonly use, whether it is in a certain range or fixed on one or two specific focal lengths.”

How can I view my commonly used focal lengths?

Please collect all the photos you have taken in the past, and then use editing software such as Lightroom or other applications to examine the focal length of each image. By doing so, you can analyze your habitual use of focal lengths.

I would recommend choosing a zoom lens if you find yourself using more than two different focal lengths, as selecting prime lenses would likely require you to have two or more lenses to suit your shooting habits, resulting in increased cost and weight.

As for the statement circulating on the internet “buying prime lenses can train photography skills” or “prime lenses are the most powerful,” let’s just take a look for now.

The use of prime lenses does require some adjustment and getting used to compared to zoom lenses, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that using prime lenses is better. As long as you are aware of the limitations of each lens and can utilize your skills within those limitations, you can still capture great photographs.

I think this is something that everyone easily overlooks, mainly because they only see the advantages of the camera and forget that these advantages come at a cost.

Here’s an example: someone wants to buy a camera to capture people and things during their trip abroad. This is one of the most common reasons I have seen online for wanting to buy a camera.

This is normal because cameras can indeed capture many challenging scenes effectively through the lens focal length and powerful features of the body.

However, the accompanying weight, size, editing, or sharing still require a few additional steps, but users often overlook these costs, largely due to lack of experience in their initial use.

Unable to balance between ideal and actual experience, the purchased camera eventually ends up like an offering on the ancestral altar, placed in a corner and accumulating dust.

Convenience also starts from examining our own habits, but what we should compare is not the camera or lens, but the comparison between camera systems and smartphones.

The camera function of mobile phones has improved significantly every year, and can handle a wide range of shooting scenarios. Even in low light conditions at night, there is a chance to take beautiful photos.

So if you just want to share photos with family and friends, just buy a mid to high range smartphone to meet your photography needs. Even the most expensive smartphones are still cheaper than buying a camera. Don’t forget that the cost of buying a camera is not just the cost of the camera and lens, but also includes other hidden and visible costs, which will definitely be more expensive than buying a smartphone.

A multifunctional tool will always have a higher utilization rate than a single-function tool. A camera is a tool, bought for usage rather than being displayed as an idol. This is the key point emphasized throughout my article.

After considering the above viewpoints and conducting relevant research on the internet, I believe one will have a clear direction or choice on what kind of equipment they want to purchase.

I hope everyone can find a camera that suits them. If you are unsure or have difficulty choosing, you can also chat with me. Maybe I can help clarify some doubts or give a direction for you to think about.
